This was filmed by Norman Granz -- the musicians are syncing over pre-recorded tracks. You'll notice it in differences between Bird's and Hawkins' fingering / breathing and the actual recording. According to L. Feather's account, Bird wasn't being disrespectful at all, and Hawkins wasn't angry at being cut off (Bird's syncopated start on the weak beat of the previous measure is a bop mainstay). How could Hawkins be angry if they were essentially faking it over a recording?

@MetaCraken i think he does it on purpose to show Hawkins that his time is up. You can see how pissed off Hawkins is when he does it. |
